Committed to Quality

Always interested to hear about start-up businesses and entrepreneurs taking the plunge, EMMA RowBERRY visited Joel van der Schyff and Wesley John of the newly-launched MachMan to find out about their budding business.

THE young, dynamic duo of Joel van der Schyff and Wesley John combines 14 years’ mechanical and electrical experience, including design, manufacturing, fitting and turning, project management, turnkey solutions, factory layout and machine installation and commissioning. Recently retrenched, when their previous company went into provisional liquidation, these two entrepreneurs immediately launched MachMan with the purpose of offering a maintenance and part manufacturing service for equipment for the food, beverage, and allied industries. The first machine manufactured by MachMan is a three-head piston filler on a gated conveyor system for HQ Foods.

Another dynamic entrepreneur, HQ Foods’ Mohammed Adams, was only too happy to show off his new filler from MachMan at his headquarters in Landsdown Industria, Cape Town. ‘HQ Foods produces a range of sauces that have found the perfect balance between quality and affordability – making them highly popular,’ Mohammed explains. HQ Foods launched in 2009, when Mohammed and his brother, Ebrahim, saw a gap in the market for bottle blowing and injection moulding polypropylene flip-top caps. Once producing PET bottles (8 000/hour) they decided to produce a range of sauces and now this multi-million rand company boasts three distinct operations – bottle blowing and injection moulding operation, sauces from HQ Foods, and Eurochoc, one of South Africa’s largest independent chocolate manufacturers.

Committed to quality

With increasing demand, and plans for expansion, for HQ’s sauces in Namibia, Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, George, and Cape Town, Mohammed decided it was high time to fully automate his facility.

MachMan’s is the first fully-automated line at HQ Foods and fills 1 500 bottles/hour. ‘Our versatile, ultra-clean machine copes with various viscosities, from water to light pastes, without hand contact, thanks to the volumetric piston filler,’ explains MachMan’s director, Joel van der Schyff. Once filled, the 375ml, 500ml and 750ml bottles are automatically capped and labelled. HQ Foods also supplies two- and five-litre sauces for the catering industry and is currently producing 42 tons of sauce/day.

All the machine’s working parts are fully accessible and MachMan provides HQ Foods with on-site training, consulting and on-going maintenance and support when required. MachMan is currently integrating a fully-automated shrink packer to the filling line for tertiary packaging. Services provided by MachMan include engineering solutions, machine manufacture, rebuilding and refurbishment, as well as mechtronic solutions and automation including conveyors, spares and part manufacture.

‘Our focus is firmly placed on design, layout, quality and customising our equipment to our customers’ specifications,’ Joel concludes.
